In September 2025, we visited University of California, Merced for the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) Shared Resource Laboratory project. Between tours of the campus and research facilities, our team (Uta Grieshammer, Susan Swift, Dan Eriksson) kicked off this exciting project that will expand with the research core facilities at UCM. These facilities support very exciting health-oriented initiatives at UCM. Special thanks to our hosts at UCM Daniel Okoli, PhD, MBA, AIA, AUA, NCARB, CEFP, Kara McCloskey, David Gravano, Edvardas Vilciauskas for sharing the exciting growth of the university, research, facilities and community connections.

About CIRM

The California Institute of Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) is the first-ever taxpayer-funded agency in the US—and one of the world’s largest institutes of its kind—dedicated to accelerating the development of innovative cell and gene therapies. https://www.cirm.ca.gov/

Dan Okoli gave us a brief tour of the UCM Campus from the perspective of campus architect and planner. UCM is growing to fulfill the vision of student population, academics and research. Merced has built out, and continues to build, the newest University of California campus.

The Shared Resource Laboratory

The new SRL will complement the growing core laboratories at UCM. CIRM will be joining a developed context of core laboratories to support research, including research on Valley Fever and other diseases impacting the Central Valley in the new biosafety lab. Expect further reports as the SRL is built out.
