We visited the resurrection of the global treasure in Paris, France. What did we learn?

While it wasn’t on the radar when we planned our visit to Paris for December 2024, a rare opportunity arose when the announcement was made that the venerable cathedral was reopening after destruction in the 2019 fire. Read on to hear what we are sharing here.

Every trip is an opportunity for planners and architects and this was no exception. Despite warnings of crowds, our visits were not terribly crowded. The wait to enter Notre Dame was a fraction of the Louvre or any major Disney ride. The visit exceeded expectations in many ways. Inside, the color and light of the space was phenomenal. The cleaning and rebuilding made the spaces brighter than before. The art in the cathedral is phenomenal and the architecture of the space enlightening./

One surprise revelation was outside around the side on the Rue du Cloitre – where only a fraction of visitors pass when visiting the cathedral. The project team used the public screen wall to highlight the design and construction reconstruction process. These panels share the vast effort of craftspeople and artists in meticulous documentation, cleaning and painstaking efforts needed to reconstruct the cathedral. Such dedication!

The reconstruction of Notre Dame is still a work in progress, and a living laboratory. Such recognition of what humans can achieve in a relatively short time and with application of resources to a global asset.

Fortunately the project screenwall provides a living museum documenting the overwhelming effort. Some in situ photographs are included in this post. More from the wonderful presentation is located here:
